Evelyn Beatrice Longman (1874-1954) was the first woman sculptor to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1919. Her allegorical figure works were commissioned as monuments and memorials, adornment for public buildings, and attractions at art expositions in early 20th-century America. She worked on a number of public commissions, including assisting Daniel Chester French with the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The sculpture Victory of Mercy was commissioned in 1947 and is located at the Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, Connecticut, USA.

William Shakespere

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

The quote ‘The quality of mercy is not strain'd, it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes’ is from the play The Merchant of Venice, Act 4 scene 1, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598.
