DALOU, JULES (1838-1902) was a French sculptor and pupil of Carpeaux and Duret who went on to become one of the most brilliant virtuosos of nineteenth-century France. Dalou was co-founder of the New Salon (Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts) in Paris.

Inspirationz

‘Liberty without Wisdom is always in peril and Wisdom without Liberty is always in vain’ is an Inspirationz paraphrase of a quote by 35th president of the United States John F Kennedy (1961-1963) during his 18 May, 1963 speech in Nashville at the 90th Anniversary Convocation of Vanderbilt University where he said “Liberty without learning is always in peril, and learning without liberty is always in vain”. The word "Wisdom" was used instead of "Learning" so that the quote fully integrated with the name of Dalou's sculpture Wisdom Supporting Liberty.

In Wisdom supporting Liberty, Jules Dalou created an image of Libertas the Greek Goddess of Liberty falling because she was too weak to stand alone, and Athena, the Greek goddess of Wisdom holding her up to keep her from falling. There were a number of casts made of the sculpture, the one shown is on display at the National Museum of Wales.
